Religion, Education and Post-modernity
Andrew Wright
RoutledgeFalmer, London and New York, 2004
ISBN:0-415-29870-9
Andrew Wright has been building the case for and definition of critical religious education over a number of works which have each been essential reading for serious consideration of the teaching of the RE (Spiritual Pedagogy (1998), Discerning the Spirit (1999) Spirituality and education (2000)). In this current volume he has outlined, in the context of postmodernism and more broadly education philosophy, the strongest articulation of his view to date. Indeed it can be considered an almost fatal broadside to liberal Religious Education, at least in its simple form.

A Teacher's Handbook of Religious Education (Second Edition)
A Teacher's Handbook of Religious Education (Second Edition)
Edited by Rosemary Rivett and Lat Blaylock, (CEM:Birmingham,2003)
ISBN 1-904024297
This 80 page book stands out among professional guides to Religious Education as the most practical and directly useful. The Sections are
concise, relevant and helpful. It is full not only of information but practical ideas for teaching RE. The sections cover virtully all the topics
touched on in all the other RE teaching text books put together. The section on Assessment, achievement and evlauation provides an excellent guide to
understanding and implimenting the levels. This is not a guide to pedagogies, for which there is already a contender, but it does provide a good
handle or staring point on all the key areas. For busy studetn teachers and busy experienced teachers who can;t remember the last time they could read a book, this is indispensible.
Chapters include: law and RE, Planning, Target setting, Assessment, Skills, Attitudes, a brief outline of the 6 taught religions and pretty much everything else.
more.
Learning to Teach Religious Education in the Secondary School: A Companion to School Experience (Learning to Teach Subjects in the Secondary School)
Andrew Wright (Editor), Anne-Marie Brandom (Editor), (RoutledgeFalmer; 2000 )
ISBN: 0415194369
The standard text from trainee RE teachers, well researched and clearly written which
pprovides a good companion for student teachers ging through initial teacher training. The books focus is on key areas
which students need to show competances in which means there is no complete treatment of pedagogy or the philosophical of RE and it
does not cover the non statutory levels. However, it is a very useful guide which updates some of the topics covered in Watson's work.

The Effective Teaching of Religious Education
By Brenda Watson, (LONGMAN:London,1993)
ISBN 0-582-08707-4
A standard text from trainee RE teachers, well researched and clearly written which
provides a good grounding for beginners and a well articulated reminder for those in the profession
who have not read it yet.

Pedagogies of Religious Education
By Michael Grimmit, (McCrimmon Publishing Company: Essex,2000)
ISBN: 0855976217
The most important book about teaching RE available today. The book is a corrective to the many texts available to
RE teaching professionals. Grimmit provides a critique of current trends in RE which he succesfully argues are undermining
the subject. Chapter two provides a summary of the main pedagogies, that is theories of teaching RE. The following nine chapters
are written by most of the important academics expoinding their pedagogies. In short, this book provides a professional with
a guide to all the important RE teaching theories in the last 50 years. This book is very important as theories of teaching RE are
lacking in many training courses and seldom feature in training courses. It should be on every RE teachers bookshelf, heavily thumbed of course.
Issues in Religious Education (Issues in Subject Teaching)
By Lynne Broadbent ,Alan Brown (RoutledgeFalmer: London, 2002
; ISBN: 0415262534
A useful recent contribution in which different authors write on a range of debated topics in RE. A good complimentary text to spark of debates and discussions and
a valuable addition to the RE professional's bookcase.
